Generalist QAs in India tend to plateau around 8 to 10 LPA after five years. Domain specialists who know the business as well as the testing push past 20 to 30 LPA. The catch is that you have to actually learn the domain, which takes 18 to 24 months of deliberate effort.

This guide walks through the seven biggest QA domains in India, what makes each one different, and which one to pick if you are starting out. The salary ranges are from Naukri, Glassdoor, and levels.fyi data for Bengaluru and Mumbai as of 2026. Tier-2 cities run roughly 30 percent lower.

BFSI: banking, financial services, insurance

What you actually test

Core banking transactions (NEFT, IMPS, RTGS), UPI flows, credit-card authorisation, KYC verification, lending and underwriting decisions, settlement reconciliation, regulatory reporting to RBI and SEBI.

A typical day

Mornings are payment reconciliation runs: do the books from last night's settlement match across the bank, the switch, and the merchant? Afternoons are regression on the new UPI 2.0 feature. Evenings, if you are on a release, are change advisory board meetings explaining what changed and what risk you tested for.

What you need to learn

  • The NPCI ecosystem: UPI, IMPS, NACH, Bharat QR.
  • ISO 8583 message format for card transactions.
  • Reconciliation: how money moves and how to prove it did.
  • RBI master directions on KYC, AML, and outsourcing.
  • Database querying (SQL) at a serious level. You will live in dbeaver or Beeline.

Salary band (Bengaluru / Mumbai, 2026)

  • Junior QA (0-2 years): 4-8 LPA
  • Mid-level (3-5): 9-18 LPA
  • Senior / SDET (6-9): 20-35 LPA
  • Lead / Principal (10+): 40-70 LPA

E-commerce and consumer internet

What you actually test

Product catalogue search and ranking, cart and checkout, the coupon engine, payment gateways (Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU), delivery slot logic, returns and refunds, recommendation engines, A/B tests at the experiment layer.

A typical day

A new flash sale launches in 48 hours. The pricing rule is new, the inventory feed is new, the homepage banner is new. You write a focused regression pack for the sale, run it nightly, and on launch day you sit in the war room with the platform team watching for the moment something goes sideways at 8 a.m. when push notifications go out.

What you need to learn

  • Browser automation at scale: Selenium or Playwright with 4-8 parallel shards.
  • API testing with Postman, then pytest with Requests.
  • Payment gateway sandboxes: how to simulate a successful Razorpay payment without burning a real rupee.
  • Performance testing basics: JMeter or k6.
  • The recommendation problem: how do you test “personalised” output when the answer is allowed to vary?

Salary band

  • Junior: 4.5-9 LPA
  • Mid: 10-20 LPA
  • Senior / SDET: 22-40 LPA
  • Staff: 45-80 LPA at Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, Meesho

Healthcare and HealthTech

What you actually test

Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, telemedicine flows, e-prescriptions on ABDM-compliant platforms, lab test ordering, insurance claim adjudication, HL7 and FHIR integrations between hospital and lab.

What you need to learn

  • HL7 v2 and FHIR R4 message formats.
  • ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission) APIs.
  • HIPAA (US) and DPDP Act (India) for patient data.
  • Edge cases that matter: drug interaction warnings, dose calculations for paediatric weight ranges, allergy alerts. A test that misses these can hurt someone.

Salary band

  • Junior: 4-7 LPA
  • Mid: 8-16 LPA
  • Senior: 18-30 LPA
  • Niche specialist (FHIR / HL7): 30-55 LPA

Telecom and OSS / BSS

What you actually test

Operations Support Systems (provisioning a new SIM, activating a plan) and Business Support Systems (billing, charging, credit control). Add 5G slicing, IPTV, IoT SIM management.

What you need to learn

  • The OSS/BSS stack: Ericsson, Amdocs, or open-source like SigScale.
  • 3GPP protocols at a high level (Diameter, GTP).
  • SOAP services. Yes, still. The OSS/BSS world is older than REST.
  • JMeter or LoadRunner. Billing cycles process hundreds of millions of CDRs.

Salary band

  • Junior: 4-7 LPA
  • Mid: 8-15 LPA
  • Senior: 18-32 LPA

EdTech

What you actually test

Course catalogues, video streaming with adaptive bitrate, live-class platforms, doubt-solving flows, certificate generation, gamification, scholarship-test workflows.

A typical day

Loads of integration with content delivery networks (Akamai, CloudFront, Bunny) and live-streaming SDKs (Agora, 100ms, Zoom). You spend half your time validating that a video plays smoothly on a 2G Jio connection in a tier-3 town.

Salary band

  • Junior: 4-7 LPA (hit by the 2023-24 EdTech layoffs)
  • Mid: 8-15 LPA
  • Senior: 16-28 LPA

Gaming

What you actually test

Game mechanics, multiplayer matchmaking, monetisation flows (in-app purchases, gacha mechanics), anti-cheat systems, device and OS compatibility across 200+ Android devices, network resilience on flaky 4G.

Real-money gaming companies in India (Dream11, MPL, RummyCircle) have their own subdomain with strict KYC, GST, and TDS reporting layered on top.

Salary band

  • Junior: 4-8 LPA
  • Mid: 9-18 LPA
  • Senior: 20-40 LPA at real-money gaming

IoT and embedded

What you actually test

Firmware on devices that ship physically: smart meters, EV chargers, industrial sensors. The test environment includes actual hardware, not just an emulator. Add MQTT brokers, cloud sync, OTA firmware updates, and edge-cases like “what happens when the device loses power mid-update.”

What you need to learn

  • MQTT, CoAP, BLE basics.
  • Python + Robot Framework is common here, alongside C/C++ unit tests for firmware.
  • Hardware test rigs: how to script a relay to power-cycle a device on schedule.

Salary band

  • Junior: 4-7 LPA
  • Mid: 8-16 LPA
  • Senior: 18-32 LPA

How to actually choose

Ask yourself three honest questions.

QuestionThen look at
Do I want to learn deep domain rules, or do I want speed of release?BFSI / Healthcare leans rules. E-commerce / EdTech leans speed.
Am I happy spending years on the same product, or do I want variety?BFSI cores last 10+ years on the same platform. EdTech and consumer roles change faster.
Where do I live, and what is hiring there?Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad: all seven domains. Mumbai: BFSI dominates. Chennai: BFSI + healthcare. Gurgaon: e-commerce + EdTech.

Closing

Pick a domain you can stomach for at least two years. Read the domain's regulators and trade press, not just engineering blogs. RBI's annual report tells you more about the next five years in BFSI QA than any vendor whitepaper.

Our Pro Software Testing & Automation program is domain-neutral on purpose: it teaches the tooling and mindset, and the projects use Indian-context apps from across BFSI, e-commerce, and gov-tech so you can feel which domain appeals to you before you commit.
